By the Shore

I saw you yesterday, sitting by the shore.

Watching the terns dive into the sea.

Which was odd;

you’ve been gone ten years now.

Loss is a funny thing.

No matter how long someone has been gone, there’s still moments where you think you see them in line at the coffee shop or walking down the street.

It’s surprise.

It’s a double take.

But I don’t know that it’s sad. It’s similar to that certain closeness when their favorite song comes on, or I see something that reminds me of them.

Anyway, I don’t know what happens after we pass, but some part of me hopes you’re there, watching the terns dive into the sea.
